The Parkhill Community touch the land and think of the Wurundjeri People and surrounding Clans of the Kulin Nation who cared for the land before us.
We share our gratitude to their Elders past, present and emerging.
As we touch this land we promise to treasure it; taking care of all its people, animals, plants and waterways.
We at Parkhill appreciate this land.
Thank you.
Principal's Message
Week 3 has flown at Parkhill and students have continued their calm, settled work habits. It has been lovely to have the opportunity to pop my head into classes and see students hard at work.
Welcome
This year Parkhill has welcomed a number of new children and their families to our community. We know their time with us will be full of fascinating learning, fun and friends. If you see new faces in the yard say hi and show them just how much we value care, courage, curiosity and community.
Summer is heating up
The hot weather has finally hit us, well at least temporarily. Melbourne always keeps us guessing! It is important in hot weather that students have their drink bottles filled with water for easy hydration in the classroom. For our younger students it is also important to practice taking off jumpers. It is not uncommon for teachers in the classroom and on yard duty to be reminding children, of all ages, that it is just too hot for extra layers.
School Times
It is also timely to remind all families that classrooms are open for student arrival from 8:50am. This allows for students to engage in their soft start and be ready to start their learning promptly at 9:00am. If your child will be absent on any particular day, please enter an attendance note on Compass or contact the school office by 9:00am to report the absence.
If your child attends choir practice on Friday mornings, please arrive at 8:00am. If you have multiple children and only one attends choir, please do not leave your other children unsupervised outside in the yard. A parent must remain with them as we are unable to provide supervision before 8:50am. If you are unable to remain with your child, they can be booked into VillageOSHC (see below for details).
Please note that students arriving at school at or after 9:00am must signed in at the Office.

TWILIGHT SPORTS

Dear Parents/Carers,
Our Twilight Sports night is nearly upon us. Originally set for Tuesday 28th February the night has now been pushed back a day to Wednesday 1st March. We plan to start at 6.00pm sharp and hope to finish at around 7.00pm.
In the past, many families have arrived early (about 5.30pm) to have a picnic on the hill. Like last year, the PFA will have sausages and drinks for sale.
We look forward to seeing you all there on Wednesday 1st March. And parents, don’t forget your runners for the adult’s race!

Our Restorative Practices information session has been changed to May 9th - save the date!
Have you heard the term ‘Restorative Practice?’ Do you know what Restorative Practices are? Did you know that Parkhill applies Restorative Practices in our own values and behaviour management?
On May 9th we are holding a Restorative Practices information session in the library run by Behaviour Matters Director, Dave Vinegrad. The session is free and will give you a stronger understanding of the Restorative Practices approach to behaviour, greater awareness of the Parkhill Primary School way and perhaps even some ideas for approaching behaviour at home! Visit https://behaviourmatters.net.au/Profile.php to for more information.
We hope to see you there on May 9th. More details to come!

Care Groups: Anniversary of the National Apology
This week in Care Groups we commemorated the anniversary of the National Apology. The National Apology to Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples was delivered by the former Prime Minister Mr. Kevin Rudd on February 13th, 2008, and acknowledged in particular the Stolen Generations who suffered trauma because of past government policies. We discussed how powerful the word sorry can be and talked about how it can change how we feel and our relationships. We then drew a picture of our face, tore it up and then glued the pieces back together to show how an apology can help us patch things back together.

STEAM Update
This week in STEAM Y4/5B explored the early 1900’s work of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani. They learned about the iconic elongated features of his portraits and sculptures. Inspired by African masks, Modigliani painted his subjects with mask like features. Check out the great job 4/5B did at emulating his style.

4/5B Setting Out
In Y4/5, students have been focusing on their setting out.
In Writing this means:
- Title and date.
- Writing neatly and on the line.
- Starting each new line next to the margin.
- Ruling a line beneath finished learning so students can start at the same place in their book and save paper.

In Maths this means:
- Title and date.
- In a grid book, only one digit or symbol per square. Setting out like this is important as it helps student understanding in place value.
- Working down in columns instead of across.
- Ruling a line beneath finished learning.

Well done to all our Y4/5 students for their efforts here. Showing our value of Care in setting out helps to develop pride in student learning.

PFA News
WHAT IS THE PFA?
Parent and Friends Association (PFA) is a group of parents and carers that want to help our school community thrive and enjoy being involved in events and fundraising.
What do I need to do, I hear you ask.
Simply put, anything you can help with, big or small, is really appreciated.
When we hold events like cupcake stalls, if you can bake or help sell on the day that’s perfect. You could help cook or serve at the Twilight Sports BBQ, or source items for the silent auction.
We welcome everyone’s contribution. Please consider joining as a general member or perhaps stepping into an office bearing role.
If you are interested in learning more about the PFA, please reach out to Zoe 0459 841 337 or parents.friends.secretary@gmail.com or come chat when it picks up.
