ENGINEERING A NEW LIMB

P1010342

Students in 5/6 have been inquiring into changes and advancements in medical technology. One of the topics that students were very interested in was prosthetics. So we thought why not have a go at making our own prosthetic leg!

Working in teams the students used the design process of ask, research, imagine, plan, create, test and improve.

Armed with all sorts of materials from home and school, they cut, taped measured, taped, glued, taped and then taped some more to create a prosthetic leg.  The aim was for the leg to be able to bear weight, fit the chosen patient and allow them to balance and hopefully even walk.

Testing the prosthetics resulted in widely varying degrees of success and many laughs. But even though some didn’t last a step there was still a lot learnt and we are now even more in awe of the advancements made in technology and medicine.
